My name is Bram Sikkens, a Mechelen native through and through. Since I was 8 years old, you could often find me on the Leuvense Vaart, where I pursue my passion for kayaking. From a young age, I’ve cherished the dream of becoming the world’s best kayaker someday. The first part of my career mainly involved the non-Olympic but highly adventurous whitewater discipline, where I managed to clinch a European title as a junior.
Later in my career, I dared to take the leap to pursue my Olympic dream. After securing a European title in the under-23 category and achieving a top 12 finish at the elite level, I landed a top-level sports contract, which came with the opportunity to dedicate myself full-time to my sport.
To this day, I continue to pursue my dream. In a career filled with many beautiful and challenging moments, I’ve learned above all that we must always keep dreaming, and as long as we don’t give up on our dreams, difficult times are often followed by beautiful ones.
My dream is to become the best athlete I can possibly be. Pursuing it is one of the most beautiful, yet simultaneously one of the toughest experiences one can endure. It consists of a mixture of wonderful moments and sometimes prolonged periods of doubt and disappointment. For me, that’s precisely the beauty of chasing your dreams.
My dream is not only to enjoy the destination but also the journey along the way.
My dream is to conquer all challenging moments, to learn from the mistakes I make, and to discover how strong and resilient we can be as human beings.
I dream of having the courage to keep on dreaming.
